The main objective of the survey was to derive reliable estimates of indicators relevant to the transport industry in the country. The survey covered a total of 6,000 households selected from 400 Enueration Areas (EAs) across the country. The survey collected information on the demographic characteristics of the household members including age, sex, level of education and employment status. More detailed information was collected on the modes of transport used to school, hospital/clinic, market places, etc. Information was also collected on the waiting time at bus stops, time taken to travel and from school, hospital/clinics, etc. and the cost of travel. Questions were also asked about the kind of difficulties household members faced in the use of the various modes of transport. Ghana The survey was a National Coverage The lowest level of aggregation was the Region. There were 10 administrative regions and 138 districts in Ghana at the time of the survey. The basic unit of analysis was individuals in households. The survey covered a sample of 6,000 households selected from 400 Enumeration Areas across the country and was representative of the population. Questions on marital status were asked of only household members aged 12 years and older. Questions on childbirth were asked of only females aged 12 years and older. Questions on economic activity were asked of household members aged 7 years and older. Questions on education were asked of only household members aged 3 years and older. Questions on market access for agricultural produce were asked of household members whose main occupation was farming. Questions on general transport use were asked of household members aged 6 years and older. Sample survey data [ssd] The scope of the National Transport Household Survey including: Demographic characteristics of household members including school attendance. Means of transport to and from school or workplace and difficulties or obstacles faced. Means of transport to a health facility or the market place. Monthly expenditures on the use of transport and satisfaction with services provided. Market access for agricultural produce. Ghana Statistical Service A sample of 6,000 households was selected from 400 Enumeration Areas (EAs) for the survey. The frame from which the sample was selected was based on the 2000 Population and Housing Census. The frame was stratified into urban/rural and the 10 administrative regions of the country before sample selection. The sample was selected in two stages. The first stage involved the systematic selection of 400 EAs with probability proportional to size, the measure of size being the number of households in an EA. The second stage involved the selection of 20 households from each selected EA. The first 15 households selected in each EA were interviewed and the extra 5 households served as backup for replacement in case of a non-response or the absence of a selected household. The survey was implemented according to the Sample Design. The only difference from other surveys was that households which could not be located were replaced. Face-to-face [f2f] The survey being part of the Trnasport Indicators Database Project, stakehoder meetings were held to identify transport sector indicators after which the questionnaire was developed. The questionnaire was further subjected to further reviews by stakeholders and pre-tested before finalization. The final questionnaire for the fieldwork was published in English. An instruction manual was developed alongside the questionniare to guide both the supervisors and interviewers. There was a pre-testing of the questionnaire after the compilation and review of the indicators at a stakeholders' workshop. A 10-day residential training workshop was organized for the field personnel. The training involved lectures on interviewing techniques, understanding of concepts and definitions, mock interviews and field practice. There were 12 teams formed for the fieldwork, made up of a supervisor and three interviewers. An additional team was set up to edit the questionnaires from the field before data capture. There were sessions for interview practice in the major local languages. Interviews were conducted in English and the major languages. The supervisor visited the locality to identifyy the selected households and arrange for the interviews. There was a meeting with the community leaders to explain the purpose of the survey before the interviews took place. There were 12 teams formed for the data collection made up of a supervisor and three interviewers. The role of the supervisor was to arrange for the interviewers to meet the selected households for the interview. For each enumeration area, the supervisor met with the community leaders to explain to them the purpose of the data collection exercise. He/She was also required to review the completed questionnaires for each interviewer. There were field visits by members of the project implementing team to check the work of the teams and also assist in resolving any problems in the field. Sample eights were calculated for eac Enumeraion Area for the computation of estimates for the entire population. These were adjusted by the number of households successfully interviewed using the household listing done for the survey. The completed questionnaires from the field were edited by 5 editors who were selected during the training of personnel for trhe fieldwork. They also coded some porions of the questionnaire, particlaurly occupation and industry before data capture. Data capture was done using CSPro. A double-entry entry data capture strategy was adopted using 6 data entry operators to ensure data quality. After cleaning and validation, the data was exported into SPSS for analysis. The data entry personnel had earler been trained alongside the field personnel to familiarize themselves with the questionnaire. Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) requires all users to keep information and microdata strictly confidential. In this regard, before being granted access to microdatasets, all users have to formally agree to observe the following: 1. Not to make copies of any files or portions of files to which access has been granted except with the authorization by GSS 2. Not to willfully identify any individual or household or establishment in the microdataset 3. To hold in strictest confidence, the identity of any individual or household or establishment that may be inadvertently revealed in any documents or discussion, or analysis. Such unintended identification revealed should be immediately brought to the attention of GSS. 4. Microdata obtained from GSS are protected by copyright law and therefore not for re-distribution or sale 5. Prospective clients or data users may be required to submit and sign an affidavit of confidentiality of microdata they access Govenment Statistician Ghana Statistical Service, Transport Indicators Household Survey (NTHS 2007), Version 1.0 The Ghana Statistical Service as a public institution has the obligation to promote data dissemination to facilitate national development. Making mcrodata available will enable students and the academia to conduct research works, assist investors to take business decision, help the individual to evaluate and take appropriate decisions. It will also assist the government to formulate appropriate policies and programmes to facilitate national development. GSS' policy framework provides access to data through: 1. Public use files. These categories of data sets are accessible by all without any payment. They are available on-line to all interested users, for research and statistical purposes only. 2. Licensed datasets. These categories of data sets are accessible under certain conditions. Thus, prospective clients/data users may access any data based on certain conditions set by the GSS 3. Datasets only accessible on location. We consider this category as a data enclave where some data sets are only accessible at GSS offices and prospective data users and researches have to physically be available at GSS offices for further discussions before data are released. Thus, data enclave would not be linked to the outside world through our web site or other medium. Verions 1.0 Education and use of transport services.NSDstat This sections looks at the current educational attendance of all household members aged 3 year and older. For those curretly attending school, questions were asked on the means of transport usually used to go to and from school. Questions were also asked on the average waiting time and travel time and the amount spent. Qestions were asked on the number of trips made using vaious modes of transport in the last four weeks before the survey and the type of difficulties encountered going to and from school. 20320 41 Nesstar 200801 Ghana Statistical Service Checks were made on the eligibility of household members who responded to the questions in this section. There were also checks on the correctness of skips on some of the questions. Missing data is coded as 9 or a series of 9s that fills the length of the field. This is the final dataset used for the preparation of the report. Health.NSDstat This sections asks questions relating to visits to a medical facility during the last four weeks before the interview. For those who visited a health facility, they were asked for reasons why they chose the facility and the distance to the facility. They were aslo asked if they encountered any difficulties in accessing the health facility. Questions were also asked on the time spent travelling to and from the facility and the cost of transport. Questions were also asked questions on the mode of transport used and the number of trips they made using the various modes of trransport in the last four weeks. Questions were also asked on access to a health facility to deliver a child and whether any difficulties were encountered accessing the facility. 20878 42 Nesstar 200801 Ghana Statistical Service For questions on child birth, checks were made as to wether the respondent was a female aged 12 years and older. Economic activity.NSDstat SECTION D 1: ECONOMIC ACTIVITY (Questions were asked of household members 12 years and older who had engaged in an economic activity during the last 7 days before the interview). Questions in this section related to the sector of employment of those who did some work in the last 7 days before the interview. Questions were asked on the type of occupation and industry and the modes of travel to the workplace. There were questions on the number of trips made using the various modes, the waiting and travel time, amount spent and the kind of difficulties encountered traveling to and from the workplace. 18801 50 Nesstar 200801 Ghana Statistical Service The data was checked to determine whether only the eligible household members were interviewed. There were also checks on the occupation and industry to ensure the correct codes were assigned. Missing data is coded as 9 or a series of 9s that fills the length of the field. Market access for agricultural produce.NSDstat This section was answered by only houseold members who were engaged in agriculture as their main occupation. Questions were asked about the type of agricultural activity they were engaed in, outlets for the agricultural produce, and difficuities encountered in the marketing of their produce. Questions were also asked on the number of trips made using the various modes of transport during the 7 days to the interview. This section has general questions on transport use to be answered by the househols head or other resposible adult. Questions were asked on how long it will take to walk to the nearest transport terminals and some facilities inlcuding food shops, Post Office and the Police Station. Questions were also asked on the means of transport to these facilities, difficulties faced and the frequesncy of the means of transport. The main objective of the survey was to derive reliable estimates of indicators relevant to the transport industry in the country. The survey covered a total of 6,000 households selected from 400 Enueration Areas (EAs) across the country. The survey collected information on the demographic characteristics of the household members including age, sex, level of education and employment status. More detailed information was collected on the modes of transport used to school, hospital/clinic, market places, etc. Information was also collected on the waiting time at bus stops, time taken to travel and from school, hospital/clinics, etc. and the cost of travel.
